Psalm 54
- What did the psalmist (David) ask God to do in verse 1?
- What is the state of emotion and/or mind of the psalmist in vv1-3?
- God helps us in the way he helps the psalmist to deal with attack of power and mind. In what ways has God helped us?
- The evil people are described as fearless (v3) but what did God do to them in v5?
- God is described as a “helper” – almost all English translation use this word. Think of someone you know who needs a helper due to distress at home, work or with their friends, and what ways we can link them to God.
- Memorise one verse in this psalm and recall it frequently throughout each day in the coming week. What has God spoken to you?

Psalm 119 part 3
- Read vv121-128. The psalmist is confident that God is with him. How does that contrast with what he said about those who are against God?
- The “evil people” surfaced again in v150. Given this situation, what did the psalmist request God to do to these people, and to him?
- Having spent three studies on this psalm, what contrasting words does the psalmist have for his relationship to God and what he asked God to do to those against him?
- Spend some time on our own to write a short poem (2 to 4 lines) including “I love your word…” and “God, deal with those difficult people…”. Share your poems in the group.
- Written more than 2000 years ago, this psalm celebrates God’s faithfulness and utters the psalmist’s assurance of God’s provision. To what extent do we claim that God’s promises for the psalmist are still true or righteous (v172) today?
- What is the overriding theme or verse for you in this psalm? Share this in the group.
- Imagine the verses of this psalm are instead represented as art, i.e., the words are depicted in art, not word by word; or as a piece of music, architecture, analytical workflow or even robotic sequence. What do the art or such alternative medium show or do that would communicate this psalm?

Questions set by Gillian from Nottingham
Here we see a court scene with God judging his own people.
- When did God make a covenant with Israel?
- TWhat are the things that God does not require from the Israelites and what could this imply about the attitude of other nations to their gods?
- What does this psalm say about the gods of the other nations?
- What are the things that God considers to be wicked? How many of the ten commandments do you see being broken?
- What is it that God is looking for as evidence of their covenant loyalty?
- How does thanking God and calling on him in the time of trouble bring blessing?
- Conversely, what happens when we become distant from God and why?
