Psalm 79
- God is described as being angry with his people. What might be the reason(s)?
- In most English translation of v.5, God’s jealousy “burns like fire”. What might God be jealous about?
- The psalmist, on the one hand, asks God to stop being jealous, and on the other hand, tells God that they are being mistreated, the temple defiled and the city in ruins. Place ourselves in the situation of the psalmist, how might we react, and the hours and days going by feel like?
- Imagine a major problem has occurred with our church building, rendering it unfit for any use for at least 6 months. Also, there are serious problems with the prominent mission projects the church is a part of: v4 and v7 sound ominously fitting descriptions. How might this psalm help in spiritual direction and deciding what to do within the congregation and the community?
- Imagine the above question being applied to a suffering individual in our church, showing all the symptoms of panic attacks sustained over years of bullying at work and long-term caring for the family members. This person has sought help from our church, and two members have volunteered to meet with them regularly. What should the members do or not do in their supporting this individual?
- According to this psalm, how should God treat the devouring nations who have devoured the temple and the city (or our church and all that it stands for in the community)?
